Willkommen Sila in Honduras / Welcome to Sila in Honduras

Heute Mittag konnten wir Sila aus der Schweiz am Flughafen Toncontín in Tegucigalpa empfangen. Sie kommt aus der Schweiz und wird 3 Monate im Projekt "Geburtshilfe" in einem öffentlichen Spital hier in Honduras mitarbeiten und die gebärenden Frauen emotional unterstützen.

Sila from Switzerland arrived today at the airport Toncontin in Tegucigalpa. She will volunteer in the project "midwifery" in a public hospital in Honduras. She will support emotionally the Honduran women before and while giving birth.

Why volunteer in Honduras

I got asked by many people "why shall I rather prefer to volunteer in one country than travelling around the world?"

There are a few reasons why volunteer in Honduras:

Volunteering in Honduras shows that you are willing to step outside your comfort zone to make a difference to the lives of others. Employers appreciate this and they value the life experience, soft skills and cultural understanding that you will gain through volunteering. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to take time out of your regular routine and think about what it is you really want to do with your life.

Working in another country will provide you with the opportunity to gain knowledge, experience and skills which you may not have been able to acquire at home. The obvious example is learning a foreign language much faster than you could at home by immersing yourself into the language and culture. In addition, by volunteering in your field of interest you will have the opportunity to learn new ways to approach different problems, and you will gain valuable work experience in a new environment.

Volunteering is very different to being a tourist because you will spend a significant amount of time in one place and you will be working on a daily basis with local people. This provides an invaluable opportunity to learn about different cultures, develop an understanding of the issues facing host communities and develop a sense of global citizenship.

190 Jahre Unabhängigkeit Honduras

Heute am 15. September 2011 feierten wir hier in Honduras 190 Jahre Unabhängigkeit. Es wurde an allen grösseren Orten gefeiert, indem die verschiedenen Schulen sowie private und öffentliche Institutionen an Umzügen teilnahmen. In der Hauptstadt Tegucigalpa alleine nahmen über 40 Institutionen teil.

Freiwillige Arbeitseinsätze auf der Karibikinsel Roatan

Wie in Tegucigalpa suchen wir auch auf Roatan das geeignete Projekt gemäss den Wünschen und Interessen der "Freiwilligen". Die Einsatzgebiete auf Roatan sind wie auch in Tegucigalpa vielseitig. Beispiele von Einsatzgebieten findet ihr auf unserer Homepage www.swho.org.

Roatan hat sich in den letzten Jahren zum Touristenziel Nummer 1 in Honduras entwickelt. Das zweitgrösste Korallenriff der Welt, die traumhaft weissen Sandstrände sowie das kristallklare Wasser ziehen tagtäglich viele Touristen nach Roatan. Mehrmals pro Woche legen mehrere Kreuzfahrtschiffe im Hafen von Roatan an. Obwohl Roatan immer wie mehr von Ausländern aufgesucht wird, welche sich auf Roatan niderlassen, leben auf Roatan immer noch viele Personen in Armut. Leider besuchen nicht alle Kinder die Schule (obwohl die öffentliche Schule gratis ist).

Eure freiwillige Hilfe wird daher auf Roatan vielerorts benötigt und von den Einheimischen sehr geschätzt. Bist du interessiert und möchtest du die Einheimischen tatkräftig unterstützen? Melde dich bei uns unter swho.cm@gmail.com.

Ausflug mit Therese nach San Lorenzo

San Lorenzo liegt im Süden von Honduras, ungefähr 1 Stunde Autofahrt von Tegucigalpa entfernt. San Lorenzo ist bekannt für seine Meeresfrüchte Industrie wie beispielsweise der Shrimps, den Tourismus wie auch die tropischen Früchte. Ausserdem wird in der Umgebung von San Lorenzo Salz produziert.
